Spend time in prayer + silence with God asking him to meet you + speak to you.

Bible Reading

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.

And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar.

Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.”

So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.

Devotion

Remember that Genesis is the book of beginnings. Today you read about the beginning of something truly amazing – the origin of different languages.

Up to this point in history all people spoke one language. God’s creativity went on display once again when He decided to separate people by languages.

God used his amazing creativity to address a serious problem in the people – they had turned their attention away from God and put it on themselves. That issue still needs to be addressed in our own hearts every day.

God’s agenda for us is always the best.

He is great at replacing our limited dreams with His plans that are much greater and for our good, as well as the glory of His name.

Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you.

He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination!

He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.

(Ephesians 3:20, The Passion Translation)

The Big Question

What selfish agenda are you pursuing?

Are you trying to gain attention, comfort, or pleasure for yourself?

How can you take steps to let go of your agenda today?

Conclude in prayer and silence reflecting on what you’ve learned.
