Going Deeper

Everybody loves a good love story.

In Exodus 24, God’s people enter into a covenant with God.

When you read the passage, it reads like a Wedding Ceremony:

  • Exodus 24:3 = Declaration of Intent (Getting Engaged)

  • Exodus 24:4 = Formal Ceremony

  • Exodus 24:5-6 = Getting Ready to Enter God’s Holy Presence

  • Exodus 24:7 = Formal “I Do”

  • Exodus 24:8 = Signing the Legal Papers

  • Exodus 24:9-11 = Wedding Reception

Making It Personal

Read Moses’ words in Exodus 24:8:

“This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has given to you.”

Who all grew up in a traditional church setting?

Do Moses’ words sound familiar to you?

They should: they are usually spoken during every observance of Communion.

1,440 years later, Jesus spoke these exact same words in Matthew 26:27-28 at the Last Supper!

Read Matthew 26:27-28

How is Jesus’ Last Supper and Crucifixion anything like what happens in a wedding?

What role does Jesus fulfill in a Wedding Ceremony? (Groom)

What role do we fulfill in a Wedding Ceremony? (Bride)

How does this deepen your view of God?

How does this connection between Moses and Jesus expand your view of God?

How do these parallels deepen your view of the Scriptures… are you surprised, delighted?

This week, get a Bible you can understand and re-read Exodus 24 and Matthew 26. Write down all the similarities and parallels you discover.
